It was in 1980, when Mr. Dong-Chin Lim, then a trial court judge, decided to leave
public service and begin his career as a practicing lawyer. After more than ten years of
experience as a judge, Mr. Lim felt somewhat saturated, feeling that a judge's role in a
continental legal system was less creative than that of an advocate. |
From the beginning, he felt strongly against the idea of practicing alone
which had been the prevalent form of private practice in Korea. Thus, he ventured to open
up a private practice with other colleagues. Although, he experienced painful disputes
among partners at times and had to endure unavoidable break-ups within the firm, he was
never discouraged and continued to pursue his goal of establishing a successful
partnership. His belief in common goodness through a partnership has been rather
strengthened by such adversities and he is still trying to enhance and improve this law
firm by applying his experiences in a positive direction.
Lim, Chung & Suh is a small-sized law firm consisting of seven attorneys. This firm
was not able to grow rapidly in terms of number of lawyers due to the nation-wide shortage
of lawyers (only recently has the total number of attorneys licensed to practice law in
Korea reached 5,000) and the lack of lobbying or PR capabilities of Mr. Lim and other
partners. In spite of such handicaps, the members of this firm are quite proud to say that
this firm counts as one of the leading law firms in the field of corporate law and
litigation regarding quality of service. Out of seven attorneys, one studied in Germany
and two studied in the United States. One is a member of the New York Bar.
